I plinked the Washburn's strings a bit and it didn't object. There was no epiphany or magical moment for me but I did jump on the Internet and quickly picked up a couple of chords. After a few days of banging around on my own, I decided I could benefit from some coaching and signed up for lessons. My wife was semi-stunned by such a show of ambition since I am not known for bold, pro-active acts of self-improvement (I'm sorta known for never making bold, pro-active acts of self-improvement, in fact). She showed her support by giving me a very nice leather guitar strap and a cool wooden guitar stand for Christmas. She has, however, already grown tired of jokes about the sanctity "my music" and how I won't be around the house all that much once I start gigging
My musical goal is modest -- I just want to amuse myself. If I can play a complete song a year from now, I'll be extremely satisfied. If my kids think it's cool that the old man is taking up the guitar, that would be nice too. I don't aspire to be Stevie Ray Vaughan -- Jimmy Reed, maybe -- and this site will be a chronicle of my progress.

I don't know how you came across my blog but judging from your first post I like your outlook :)
I chuckled reading your latest entry and your profile. I know I'll want to read more.
good luck with your musical endeavors!
I too would like to learn to play the guitar or any musical instrument for that matter also. Although I took a music class at county college and aced it, they didn't teach us to play anything, just how to read sheet music. What a jip. I was hopeing at least to learn how to play twinkle twinkle little star on the organ or something. My brother in law taught himself how to play the guitar, well whoop de doo. I guess he's just special. I am hoping to have an epiphany and somehow wake up one day with the wisdom to play. Just get out of bed one day and be able to play any instrument I pick up. Keep up the faith, you'll get it.
That's an awesome story man. I taught myself how to play guitar in my teens, because I wanted to pick up chicks, but what I found was I got more into the guitar each day and actually got to the point where people said I was pretty good. Stick with it was my motto. I still play alright to this day, but wish I would have gotten more lessons from better players.
