Welcome to Play a Little Guitar

Welcome to the Play a Little Guitar blog, where I am now well into my second year of musical incompetence.

This blog, which is pleased to be cited as today's Blog of Note, is the chronicle of a middle-aged beginner with no musical background trying to amuse himself by learning the guitar. Sometimes the efforts go beyond amusing to downright comical and sometimes even tragic but as
it stands now, I am well on target to reach my goal of appearing on "Austin City Limits" in 2029.

Here you can read about Telecasters through history, my daughter and her stray guitar, a bathroom that looks like Eddie Van Halen's Frankenstein guitar, my prejudices against all B chords, goofy things said at Guitar Center stores, guitar toilet seats, the ethical dilemma of pinky-planting and the distressing trend of distressed guitars. Someday, once my band-to-be, Stinktown Willie & the Hard Liquors, makes it big, I'd like to have my own guitarist action figure.

And while I have your attention, can anyone tell me why they call the song 'Dueling Banjos' if one of the guys in the movie is playing a guitar? And what about a guitarist's fingers? Are they overrated? How long should they be? How many is too many and how many is too few?

Thanks for looking around.

I love guitars especially electric ones. I have a $240 Cort X11 to accompany me here in my room, along with Ibanez IBZ10G mini amp.

Little Guitar Dude...
It was written as "Feudin' Banjos" by Arthur Smith. He and Don Reno recorded it on banjos.
So the movie got the title AND the instruments wrong, plus stole the song. They got sued but the question ever remains...
Watch out for Hollywood.
Thanks for the cool blog.
I love them guitars,
all the time.

Wow, love the blog! For once, a blog of not worth being noted! I'm learning to play the electric bass right now, and struggling a bit with fingerings and such.

Great blog. I wish I could play a little guitar *sigh*, but it's just gathering dust next to my bed. *bigger sigh*.

yo man, playing the guitar isn't as easy as they say it is. It requires lots of practice. I myself have owned a guitar for like eight years and just recently i learned one song.

persevere!!!

found you from blogs of note... read your profile.. you're right... Music out of Texas is great... especially "the other side of country"... You can listen on line to 99.5 the Wolf out of Dallas... they play a good mix of contemporary country, the other side and oldies...

Oh my god! I hate B-chords too! Must be a beginner thing--I started trying to play late last year as the result of a mid-life crisis, or some such. Cool blog!

I decided to follow your blog so I can sound smart when my hubby talks about guitars. He thinks the distressed guitar thing is such a joke. If you're ever in town, he gives free lessons (don't know what that says about his teaching skills, LOL).

I remember listening to a news story about the banjos question. They were saying that there are very few banjo duets because the banjo's tone is so staccato that any mistakes in timing are magnified. It was probably easier to use the guitar.

Fantastic blog and the story about your daughter finding the guitar at school reminded me of teaching my own little girl her first chords.
As an amateur player, I look forward to reading a LOT more. Thanks!!!

Hey man, cngrats on the blog of note. If you want an easy way to learn guitar, go to www.ultimate-guitar.com to look up "tabs".

Tablature is a simple way of reading guitar notes. Numbers on the corresponding string lines show you what fret you play. Multiple notes mold into a song, so look up any song or artist on www.ultimate-guitar.com!

As Anne of Green Gables would say, I think I have found a kindred spirit. I started taking flute lessons 5 months ago and am thoroughly enjoying myself despite the fact that no one will ever want to listen to me, except me. So I am bookmarking you, not because I need to know a lot about guitars, but because I admire your spirit to learn something new.

I just started to learn how to read sheet music. I have a Yamaha keyboard I practice on. I learned a lot in a short time. I think it is possible at any age.

I enjoy reading yours here. Yeah, true. Learning to play the guitar isn't as easy as watching people do it.

I'm glad that they put you in the blog of note! Or else I wouldn't have a chance to know this interesting blog!

Keep going and I'm following!

Your blog is very cute, but I'm sorry to say that your attitude seems self-defeating.

Rock and Roll is an attitude, a mellow cocky attitude, not a specific skill set.

I can't necessarily play guitar either, but I love it all the same.

Keep up the blog!

My dad once said to me, "It's all in the fingers." And also he always told me that you gotta learn chords first. Maybe there's some advice for ya. Probably not, but its worth a shot I suppose. Good luck anyway, hope it's working out for ya.
